Many of you have seen—and commented on—our Van Scoy Jewelry Instagram and TikTok post where we explain why we do NOT want you wearing your jewelry ALL. THE. TIME.
Take it off when you’re cleaning, swimming, gardening, digging, or spending the day at the beach.
We know the next question is always:
“WHY?”
Here we go! ?
CLEANING & CHEMICALS
Gold is durable and chemically stable under normal conditions, but exposure to certain chemicals can contribute to corrosion, pitting, and structural damage over time.
And think about everything we encounter every day—cleaning products, perfumes, lotions, hairspray, sunscreen, chlorine and other chemicals. Residue can build up on your jewelry, dulling the finish, attracting dirt, and making those beautiful diamonds and gemstones look less than their best.
GARDENING & DIGGING
We LOVE gardening… just not with our jewelry on!
Gardening tools such as trowels, shovels, and pruners can scratch your metal or gemstones if you accidentally hit them.
Even gloves can become a problem. A loose glove can snag on a prong and put pressure on it. Then there’s the pressure of gripping tools and pushing against soil. That force can put stress on your ring, potentially bending the band or loosening a stone.
AND HERE'S THE BIG ONE: STONE LOSS
If a stone becomes loose while you're gardening or digging, it can fall directly into the soil. Good luck finding that tiny diamond in the dirt! Once a stone is loose, soil and debris can make it incredibly difficult to locate—and that can turn a simple afternoon of gardening into a very expensive problem.
BEACH & SWIMMING
Beach, pool, and jewelry? Not a great combination.
Sand can scratch metal and gemstones, and chlorine and other chemicals can contribute to damage and discoloration. Plus, swimming creates another very real risk: jewelry can slip off and disappear before you even realize it.
So here's our advice: Jewelry should be the LAST thing you put on in the morning. Jewelry should be the FIRST thing you take off at night.
We don't tell you this because we don't want you to wear your jewelry. Quite the opposite—we want you to enjoy it for YEARS and YEARS and YEARS. Take care of it. Keep it clean. Keep it away from chemicals and unnecessary abuse. Have it professionally inspected and cleaned regularly. Preserve the beauty. Protect the stones. Save the jewelry.
