Last week, Caroline and I traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, to attend the annual IJO Show. As we arrived at the airport on Friday afternoon, we were greeted by our driver and whisked away to our hotel in the heart of downtown Louisville. The city was buzzing with energy, and with thousands of jewelers gathering for the show, we knew it was going to be a busy and exciting week.
What is IJO?
The Independent Jewelers Organization (IJO) is one of the most respected networks of independently owned jewelry retailers across the United States and Canada. Founded in 1971, IJO brings together carefully selected jewelers who share high standards of professionalism, ethics, and exceptional customer service.
As one of the industry's leading buying groups, IJO gives its members exclusive purchasing opportunities, educational seminars, marketing support, networking events, and access to the latest trends in the jewelry industry. Through the organization's collective buying power, independent jewelers can offer outstanding quality and value while maintaining the personalized service their communities have come to know and trust.
For customers, shopping with an IJO jeweler means receiving expert guidance from a local business backed by the strength and resources of a nationally respected organization.
After arriving at the hotel, we were exhausted from traveling. We grabbed some dinner, settled into our room, and headed to bed knowing the next several days would be filled from morning until night.
Saturday began with breakfast, followed by an inspiring keynote speaker and educational classes. We learned new ways to continue exceeding our customers' expectations, explored emerging jewelry trends, and discussed the growing popularity of colored gemstones, which are making a strong comeback in today's market.
The day flew by! That evening, everyone gathered for dinner where we enjoyed great food and even better company. Spending time with fellow IJO members, sharing stories, exchanging ideas, and learning from one another is one of the highlights of attending the show. We met some of the kindest, most genuine people in the jewelry industry.
Sunday was what we had been waiting for—buying for our customers!
We met with many of our trusted sales representatives and spent hours carefully selecting pieces, often thinking of specific customers as we made our choices. This year, we purchased even more colorful gemstones along with several beautifully handcrafted designs that we're excited to bring back to the store.
One of the best parts of the buying show is meeting the designers themselves. They are true artists, pouring their creativity and passion into every piece they create. Their personalities are just as captivating as their jewelry—genuine, humble, and incredibly inspiring.
By the end of Sunday, we were completely exhausted! After a short break, we gathered once again for another wonderful dinner with fellow IJO members—many of whom we now proudly consider friends.
The rest of the week followed a familiar rhythm: purchasing beautiful jewelry during the day and enjoying dinners and conversations each evening. It was a busy schedule, but every minute was worthwhile as we searched for unique jewelry pieces we know our customers will love.
Of course, no trip to Kentucky would be complete without experiencing its famous bourbon culture! We made time for a tour of Angel's Envy Distillery, which turned out to be a relaxing and memorable afternoon. It was the perfect opportunity to step away from the show for a few hours and simply enjoy everything Louisville has to offer.
To wrap up our incredible week, we visited the legendary Churchill Downs. It was the perfect finale, filled with friendly competition, mock horse races, great food, laughter, and wonderful camaraderie with our fellow jewelers.
Attending the IJO Show each year reminds us why we love what we do. It's an opportunity to continue learning, discover beautiful new jewelry, build lasting relationships within our industry, and most importantly, bring home exciting new collections for our customers.
We can't wait to share everything we've found with you! Stay tuned!
