A HEARTFELT JOURNEY: MY EXPERIENCE AS THE HONORARY CHAIR FOR OPPORTUNITY HOUSES'
Published: Jun 26, 2024

When I was approached to be the Honorary Chair for Opportunity Houses largest fundraiser, I was honored and humbled. Opportunity House originated in 1984 as a shelter for homeless men. The shelter is now a 24-hour multi-service facility helping improve the quality of life for men, women and children in our community. Their fundraisers aim to raise funds to continue their mission and I was eager to contribute and participate to such a worthy cause.
The actual planning committee, volunteers and support staff spent countless hours meeting to discuss everything from donations, meals, and securing sponsors. Having been involved in many types of events in the past, this was different and was truly a learning experience. This was more than a dinner with a speaker and some silent auction items!
The Wine included samplings from many of our local outstanding wineries and it flowed generously throughout the evening, the wine was generously donated by the wineries. The Women included 230 women who came out to support the organization and enjoy a night of networking and fun. There was also a fashion show with beautiful models wearing lovely outfits from local boutiques including Dressed in Love Bridal, Be Mine Boutique and Andrea Folino Boutique.
The Shoes segment included prizes for guests with the most unique shoes and “The Shoe Guys”. The Shoe Guys had the task of raising their own donations prior to the event. Each had their own unique way of raising funds, but they were all very successful in their endeavor.
The evening of the event was inspiring. The energy in the room was exhilarating! Witnessing all the attendees, volunteers, donors and staff come together to support our local shelter was a gratifying experience! Highlights included the fashion show and the silent auction and live auction but the most inspiring was hearing a former resident of the shelter share how her life was changed thanks to Opportunity House!
By the end of the evening, the fundraising goal was surpassed, and a great time was shared by all.
When a community comes together to support causes that directly affect the local community, everyone wins. I encourage everyone to donate. No contribution is too small and there are many ways to help. You can also help by donating items, volunteering your time, shopping at the Opp Shop or attending one of their fundraisers.
