WHEN THE JEWELRY STORE OWNER GETS ENGAGED

 In October, during a bicycling trip to the Lake Como region of Italy, my love popped the big question. We had just cycled from Bellagio to a small town called Palanzo, perched 600 meters above sea level, one of the highest towns on Lake Como. Palanzo was the perfect spot, offering breathtaking views of the lake and its surrounding landscapes. The town, with its ancient stone alleys and medieval architecture, exuded a timeless charm that made the moment even more magical.

It was the ninth day of our trip, and his time to propose was running out. Two days earlier, another couple in our group had gotten engaged (a story for another blog). What was he to do now? With thirty of our friends present—friends with whom we share countless adventures—he decided to make his move. In front of everyone, he dropped to one knee and asked the question that took my breath away. It was the best surprise of my life.

"Surprised?" you might ask. "How could it be? Where did he get the ring? How did you not know?" These are the questions I’ve been asked countless times since our return. The answer lies in his careful planning and the help of someone who knows me better than almost anyone else: Deb.

Deb and I have worked together for over 30 years. We’ve traveled all over the country on buying trips and attended countless trade shows. If anyone knows my taste in jewelry, it’s her.
