Hi, I’m Caroline — owner of Van Scoy Jewelers.
My path to the jewelry industry wasn’t a straight line. In fact, it almost felt like a detour on my way to something else. I wasn’t one of those kids who knew exactly what they wanted to be when they grew up. I loved clothing and fashion, but I never imagined it could become a career.
My first professional adventure was in real estate. I loved the idea of showing beautiful homes and helping people find their dream space. But at the time, interest rates were 16%, and the market was tough, definitely not the glamorous world I had pictured.
Looking for stability, I took my sister’s advice and applied for a position at our local hospital. What started as a way to supplement my income turned into something much more! I fell in love with the medical field. A few years later, I joined a new physician’s start-up practice and found myself fascinated by both the science and the business side of healthcare.
That curiosity led me back to school, where I studied marketing with plans to go into pharmaceutical sales. I even loaded up on courses like biology, anatomy, and physiology and I worked two jobs to make it happen. It was a busy but memorable time in my life.
One of those jobs was part-time in a jewelry store. I started at a big chain which I did not like too much and eventually transitioned to a local independent jeweler, Van Scoy Jewelers. That’s when it clicked. I realized I had found the perfect blend of everything I loved: fashion, creativity, and helping people celebrate life’s meaningful moments.
What began as a “side job” became a lifelong passion — and ultimately, my career.
Over the years, I’ve learned that the jewelry business is about so much more than beautiful gemstones. It’s about constant learning and growth. I’ve completed gemology courses and continue to study the craft because the industry is always evolving; new technologies, materials, and trends emerge all the time.
As a small business owner, I’ve also learned to wear many hats. On any given day, I might be working customers, choosing new collections as a buyer, managing a marketing plan or handling accounting. Every role has deepened my appreciation for this industry and the people it connects me with.
Looking back, I can see how every chapter prepared me for this one. Real estate taught me about dreams and trust. Healthcare taught me about care and precision. And jewelry — well, jewelry taught me about joy. Every day at Van Scoy Jewelers, I get to help people mark life’s most meaningful moments, and that’s an incredible privilege. No two days are the same, and that’s what keeps me inspired.
