There exist numerous terms to refer to various components of a ring. Allow me to simplify and explain them to you. For now, I will focus on engagement rings, with information on other types of rings to follow.
Primarily, a ring is worn on the finger and can commonly be referred to as just that – a ring. The portion encircling the finger, known as the setting, can be categorized as either a solitaire, having no side stones, or a semi-mount featuring side diamonds. The base of the setting is known as the shank. The very bottom of the shank is the location in which a ring will be sized.
Prongs are frequently utilized to secure diamonds and gemstones, although there are various setting styles available. In the case of an engagement ring, the central stone is typically placed within the head.
This component can also be referred to as a crown and is composed of either four or six prongs.
Featured in the image below is a traditional solitaire engagement ring. This ring features a 6-prong head and a gallery setting. The 6-prong head offers extra security if a prong were to bend or break. The diamond is still securely held. The bridge allows a wedding band to seamlessly align with it. The solitaire engagement ring, a timeless classic, has remained a top-selling choice over the years.
