RING SIZING FACTS

When it comes to ring sizing, there are a few things you should know. First and foremost, it is important to get your finger sized by a professional, this will ensure that you get the perfect fit. Additionally, keep in mind that finger sizes can change over time, so it is important to have your ring resized as needed. Finger sizes can change for a variety of reasons, including weight gain or loss, pregnancy, and arthritis.  Be sure to remove rings that have become too tight or there may be a need to have them cut off.  This also should be done by a jewelry professional to ensure that the ring can properly be restored. 




How is a ring sized?

A professional jeweler will use special tools to measure your finger and determine the appropriate size. The bottom of the ring is cut, and material is either removed or added to make the difference in size. A ring that is properly sized will have no visible signs that it was altered.  Plain bands that have never been cut can usually be stretched but all others need to be cut and sized.


How much will it cost to have my ring sized?

We often get calls asking how much it costs to size a ring.  Several factors affect the price. The metal for example. Platinum versus gold and is it 14 or 18 karat, yellow or white gold. Each version will be different. The overall width of the ring determines the size of the piece to add. The wider the ring, the more it will cost to size. Sizing a ring up will cost more than sizing a ring down. 


What if my rings are engraved?

A ring is sized at the 6 o'clock position so often the engraving will be affected.  A jeweler should be able to re-engrave the ring for you.


What else should I consider when needing rings sized?

Always check if there is a manufacturer’s warranty to consider.  A sizing not done by the manufacturer can sometimes void a warranty. There also may be limits to how far a ring can be sized.  Rings that have stones that extend down the shank have a very small range that they can be altered.  Diamonds or gems can come loose during the sizing process and will need to be tightened. This will be taken into consideration when determining the fee for sizing.  One last thing to keep in mind is that the metal of your ring goes through an erosion process from normal wear and tear.  There may be a time when your ring may need to have parts replaced or your diamonds/gems may need to be reset into new settings.
