Van Scoy Buys Diamonds Direct

Diamonds

Owner Lew Hill, a Graduate Gemologist, has nearly 30 years of diamond buying experience. He and his wife, Caroline, travel directly to the world’s most significant diamond cutting center, Antwerp, Belgium, to hand pick each diamond we buy for use in the custom engagement rings, pendants and earrings manufactured on-site at Van Scoy. This enables us to control the quality and cost every step of the way. No one does more to bring you a quality diamond at a better price.

We hand pick every diamond at the cutter's office. We are often the first to see fresh production from the factory. Caroline is pictured matching smaller diamonds for use in earrings.

The cutter we deal with is one of approximately 120 DeBeers sight holders worldwide. Sight holders meet 10 times each year to purchase their allocation of diamonds from the Diamonds Trading Company (DTC). The DTC is the subsidiary of DeBeers responsible for the distribution of rough diamonds. DeBeers selects sight holders based on four factors. The first two factors are their ability to add value to the rough by cutting it into polished diamonds and their ability to in turn sell those diamonds to their customer base. A cutter is expected to promote the wearing of diamonds and is of course expected to pay promptly for purchases. A wise cutter will select customers in a similar way and expects much the same from them. At Van Scoy Jewelers we add value to the product in many ways. We start by promoting diamonds and the wearing of diamonds. We add value by manufacturing the diamonds we purchase into finished jewelry in our on site shop. We have an existing, growing customer base as a result of nearly 30 years of service to our community. And finally we provide the best in after purchase service. There are no intermediates between us and the cutter. Our direct buying enables us to control the cost and the quality of the finished product every step of the way. No one does more to provide a quality diamond at a better price.

I'm pictured here examining rough diamonds. I had the good luck to be in the cutters office on a day the sight arrived from London. Rough diamonds are examined by hand because of speed and the requirement to look at them from every angle. Polished diamonds are most always held in a tweezers.
